My husband and I differ on our favorite fictional Belgian character. Allan likes Tintin. According to Allan, who grew up in Lebanon, in many parts of the world Tintin is more famous than Narnia. You can experience this part of Belgium by reading the comic book series by Herge, watching the cartoons, or enjoying the Steven Spielberg movie “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.”
Tintin is fine, but I would prefer to watch Remy Baudouin, played by Belgian actor Ronny Coutteure in “The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume Two - The War Years.” Indiana Jones joins the Belgian army along with his buddy and experiences first-hand many of the events of World War I.
There are other, more serious things that Belgium is famous for than these young adult fictional characters, but might as well have some fun traveling to Belgium while staying at home. Fun food from Belgium includes French fries (yes, they were invented in Belgium, not France), Belgian waffles and Belgian chocolate. Godiva chocolate is just one of the brands of Belgian chocolate readily available and as for Belgian waffles, there are plenty of recipes available online.
If you want to get more serious about Belgian food, Brussels sprouts are also from Belgium and so are these delicious options: https://www.expatica.com/be/lifestyle/food-drink/top-belgian-foods-with-recipes-108654/
If you want to get more serious about Belgian movies, literature, and art, I recommend the movie “In Bruges,” the book War and Turpentine, and to check out these six Belgian museums: https://www.brusselsmuseums.be/en/news/museum-at-home-6-virtual-visits-of-museums-in-brussels?gclid=Cj0KCQjwhZr1BRCLARIsALjRVQNT78dQPBRlSRNMx93NpnN8XI5WsKC0r3JRUKhwY9x6t7WJ_f5h3HcaAvNkEALw_wcB
TheCrazyTourist.com has ten galleries of things to do in Belgium: https://www.thecrazytourist.com/?s=belgium. In keeping with my experience of Belgium as fun, I chose a picture of an amusement park, but there are many beautiful buildings and canals to see. If I actually ever make it to Belgium, I’ll let my travel advisor guide me. Here’s a shout out to my favorite travel advisor, Kaitlin Darnell at Laura's Travel in Redlands. May the travel industry survive and thrive - may we all survive, thrive, recognize our mutual humanity, learn to deal with our conflicts, and allow peace and health to flourish in Belgium and throughout the world.
