Bermuda

I remember the 1990s when I had a business suit with Bermuda shorts. I loved that suit and although it passed out of style in the United States for awhile, this February 4, 2020 article from Harpers Bazaar says it is coming back: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/shows-trends/a30752032/shorts-suits/.

Bermuda shorts were originally designed for the British armed forces in tropical climates about one hundred years ago and were copied shortly after in Bermuda. As long as they are the appropriate length (three to four inches above the knees) and worn with knee socks, blazer, and tie, Bermuda considers them acceptable to wear for business and formal occasions. They are almost always acceptable to wear while vacationing.

If we are going to travel to Bermuda while staying at home, first we need to feel like we are on vacation. There are several webcams located around Bermuda where you can get the appropriate feeling by watching the water and seeing the boats. Here are just three of them:

While sight-seeing, check the UNESCO webpage for the short video on St. George: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/983/video. There are many more videos about vacationing in Bermuda posted on YouTube: they will be mixed in with videos about the Bermuda triangle.

Amazon and The Internet Movie Database also list plenty of Bermuda Triangle movies, television programs, and documentaries. One of the most highly rated is “The Fantastic Journey” TV series from 1977. You can catch the first episode on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6no0bseowd0 and buy the whole series on Amazon if it appeals to you.

My favorite Bermuda Triangle book is Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan – which probably demonstrates that I’d rather read children’s literature than horror and sci fi.

If I ever actually go to Bermuda, I might go all fan girl and stay at Michael Douglas’ place, the Ariel Sands Cottage Colony Hotel. Apparently, his mother’s side of the family has lived in Bermuda for more than 400 years and that particular property has been in the family since the 1840s.

To see this Bermudian family in action, watch “It Runs in the Family,” since Michael’s parents and son are in it with him. The movie wasn't particularly well reviewed, maybe because expectations were high, but I enjoyed both the story line and looking for family resemblances. It’s pretty easy to find other Michael Douglas movies – my favorite is “Romancing the Stone.” If you have a sharp eye, you might remember Michael’s mother Diana Dill Douglas Darrid from many TV series and soap operas. Her entry on the Internet Movie Database lists them at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0235022/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0. In addition, she wrote an autobiography called In the Wings: A Memoir.

From Michael Douglas’ restaurant in Bermuda, I made the vegetable curry, homemade roti and coconut cheesecake from recipes in Morgan Freeman & Friends Caribbean Cooking for a Cause. For many more Bermudian recipes, check out https://www.thebermudian.com/food-a-drink/recipes/. If you click around on the same webpage, you can find current news, including information on Bermuda’s reopening status and articles about life in Bermuda right now. I particularly enjoyed the stories and articles in the Heritage section https://www.thebermudian.com/heritage/.

The Crazy Tourist has four galleries on Bermuda if you want to dream about a real trip: https://www.thecrazytourist.com/?s=bermuda.

Finally, when this pandemic is over, you might want to plan travel to Bermuda using your local travel advisor. Shout out to my favorite travel advisor, Kaitlin Darnell at Laura's Travel in Redlands. May the travel industry survive and thrive - may we all survive, thrive, recognize our mutual humanity, learn to deal with our conflicts, and allow peace and health to flourish in Bermuda and throughout the world.
