The Bahamas

Yes, I have watched every movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and rode the ride at Disneyland I don’t know how many times. Does that mean I know anything about real pirates? I didn’t until I decided to travel to The Bahamas while staying at home by listening to The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man who Brought Them Down by Colin Woodard. Who knew! How and why people became pirates, why The Bahamas were the perfect place for pirates, and how pirates eventually … well, that would be a spoiler. This book is available in Kindle, Audible, paperback and even Overdrive which means you can check it out from your library virtually even when the libraries are closed.
I also read Sidney Poitier’s letters to his great granddaughter in Life Beyond Measure. Each letter had a theme and so the story of Poitier’s life came out slowly and not in chronological order, but if you are patient enough, there are some great stories in there, especially the story about how he became an actor. If you want to watch the work of this talented Bahamian, I can personally recommend Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and To Sir, With Love. There are many more that I haven’t seen, so please use the chat feature to tell me your favorite.
If you want to do some Bahamian cooking, Morgan Freeman and Friends: Caribbean Cooking for a Cause provides several recipes: Carmelized Pineapple and White Chocolate Napoleon, Coconut French Toast, Pineapple Tarte Tatin, and Grilled Grouper with Green Pepper Gazpacho. I’ll be honest, I’m still working my way through the islands and haven’t cooked for The Bahamas yet, but the things I’ve made from this book have been delicious!

Finally, when this pandemic is over, I’ll be ready to travel to The Bahamas using my local travel advisor. Shout out to my favorite travel advisor, Kaitlin Darnell at Laura's Travel in Redlands. May the travel industry survive and thrive - may we all survive, thrive, recognize our mutual humanity, learn to deal with our conflicts, and allow peace and health to flourish in The Bahamas and throughout the world.
